Geneva, Switzerland, 21 August 2026 -/African Media Agency(AMA)/ – Rwanda is demonstrating how well-managed migration can create jobs, build skills and strengthen regional cooperation. Over the past two decades, Rwanda has emerged as a leading voice on migration in Africa, integrating migration into national development planning and working to promote safe and regular migration.
“Rwanda is showing how investment in skills, labor mobility and protection can turn migration into an opportunity for people and economies,” said International Organization for Migration (IOM) Director General Amy Pope at the conclusion of her official visit to Rwanda today. During the visit, Director General Pope met with Hon. Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva, Prime Minister of the Republic of Rwanda, as well as senior Government officials, development partners, United Nations representatives, and migrants supported by IOM. “I was grateful for the opportunity to engage with Hon. Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva and other leaders to discuss how labor mobility, skills development, diaspora engagement and protection can help people while supporting national and regional priorities,” said Pope. “IOM remains committed to supporting efforts to strengthen protection and expand pathways for safe, orderly and regular migration.”
The visit also provided an opportunity to discuss emergency preparedness, skills development, anti-human trafficking efforts and support for returning migrants rebuilding their lives.
Pope also met with development partners, international financial institutions, private sector representatives and members of the United Nations Country Team to explore stronger collaboration on skills development, labour mobility and economic growth.
Throughout the visit, DG Pope emphasized the importance of international cooperation to tackle migration challenges and maximise the benefits of migration, including by tapping into the vast development potential of diaspora engagement.
“No country can address migration challenges alone,” Pope said. “Continued cooperation between governments, international partners and the private sector is essential to expanding opportunities and ensuring migration works for people and communities.”
IOM reiterated its commitment to working with the Government of Rwanda and partners to strengthen protection, expand safe mobility pathways and support efforts that benefit migrants and communities and economies across the region.
